Ahara Traditional Ghee
A portion of the proceeds goes to A Greener World®: Empowering transparent, humane & environmentally responsible agricultural solutions through 3rd party verification & investment in sustainability.
This authentic, Indian-style ghee is made from artisan cultured butter that is slowly cooked, in the traditional method, over an open flame. Dairy solids are meticulously removed to create a rich taste & texture. We recommend using ghee in place of butter, oils & spreads for a healthy & delicious alternative. Let yourself be creative!
Ahara Rasa makes more than just "clarified butter". According to Ayurvedic text & principles, to be true GHEE, it must be cultured to get the health benefits of improved digestion & increased mental wellness, among others.
Ahara Rasa carefully sources their butter from farms with the highest animal welfare status & is the only ghee company to be Animal Welfare Certified® & Truly Grassfed®. Ahara Rasa ONLY uses cultured butter. Nearly all clarified butter, being sold as "ghee" in grocery stores, including Indian grocery stores, is NOT made from cultured butter, and therefore, may lack the benefits of true ghee.
"Ahara Rasa" (Ah-hah-rah Ruh-Sah) means "the essence of food" in Sanskrit. It is the end product of good digestion and the subtle energy derived from your food, rather than the mass itself.
Ahara Rasa is committed to the traditional process of ghee outlined in the Charak Samhita (the ancient text of Ayurvedic Medicine). This process specifies that ghee should be made from Makhan (cultured butter) where the cream is first turned to yogurt before being churned into butter. Ahara Rasa also makes their ghee in small batches, over open flame rather than in large steam kettles like much of the other ghee on the market. Mantra is chanted & played during the entire process of ghee making to insure a sattvic (peaceful) & energetically healthy product.
We are confident that these fastidious & specific rules by which Ahara Rasa creates their ghee make for a healthier, better-tasting & more medicinally viable ghee that you will feel in every cell of your body & be proud to feed your family.
Caring for & Life of your products:
Ghee does not need to be refrigerated. Ghee is very stable, and when kept at room temp range, out of the sun, it remains good for at least a year, if not 2 years from opening. We recommend 6 months from opening, because human behavior dictates that you may accidentally contaminate your ghee with a drop of water, or little kid fingers dipping into jars, so use basic common sense, keep your ghee clean and dry, and it will serve you well throughout your jar! KEEP GHEE OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT (which will turn it white and rancid)
Made with Cultured Ghee:
Ahara Rasa goes through great lengths and expense to insure they have a supply of cultured butter. They use companies with a culturing process most similar to the one described in Vedic texts (as close as you can get while meeting US dairy regulations). They use live cultures to first turn the cream into a type of yogurt, or curd. They let the magic happen in a large vat, overnight, before churning slowly in a slow churn. The result is a super-flavorful butter, which makes excellent tasting ghee. Since the process of making ghee dictates that it must be cooked, and heated over 200F to become ghee, any live cultures are killed in the process. However, don’t dismiss the benefits of these killed bacteria. A 2010 study shows that bacteria killed by heat can also have beneficial effects on the body, in effect, making our ghee PREBIOTIC! So, by using cultured butter, they are not only helping your ghee to be much tastier, but also adding a benefit not found in uncultured (most other ghee on the market) ghee. This is why the sages found that culturing was of vital importance. THIS is what makes ghee so wonderfully digestible!
Made from Grass-fed Cows:
Ahara Rasa Ghee is produced from butter made from cows grazed on pasture year-round. Their ghee is 95% grass-fed and third party certified through the Truly Grassfed® program. It is not 100% due to humane standards allowing for grain feeding for newly birthed cow-mommies, who might need more boost for healthy milk production. They are year round pastured. This is a supplement to ensure they are happy and never ever hungry! Grains are NON-GMO Verified® and used rarely.
