    Action Against Hunger

Founded in 1979 in Paris, France, by a team of scientists, doctors, intellectuals and writers, Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organization that takes decisive action against the causes and effects of world hunger. The organization’s mission is to eliminate hunger through the prevention, detection and treatment of malnutrition, especially during and after emergencies of conflict, war and natural disasters. Additionally, Action Against Hunger also focuses on combating the diseases accompanying poor nutrition, providing communities access to safe drinking water and advocating against governmental policies that can lead to malnutrition. This global organization works to integrate its programs within local communities so that their efforts offer long-term, sustainable solutions worldwide.

Ending Hunger & Malnutrition in India

Today, we are happy to report that India’s food scarcity and malnutrition rates are improving. However, there is still a lot of work to tackle the challenges contributing to malnutrition. Some of these issues include widespread poverty, rapid population growth, weak governance, poor health systems and social inequities due to gender, caste, ethnicity and religion. In fact, 24% of the world’s malnourished population lives in India, with 1 in 3 children suffering from malnutrition and 68% of deaths under 5 years of age caused by malnutrition. Thankfully, Action Against Hunger is responding to this call for help in India through its work in over 1,200 rural villages and communities in  Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

Since 2011, Action Against Hunger has been providing aid to India, focusing on improving nutrition, food security and increasing access to water, sanitation and hygiene. With its small but mighty team of 195 employees working in India, the organization has provided children with therapeutic food and supplements to treat and prevent life-threatening hunger. The team is also working to improve how malnutrition is diagnosed, treated and prevented. Just last year, Action Against Hunger trained 3,448 government front-line workers, conducted 98,585 home visits and served over 46,000 individuals.

Another example of Action Against Hunger’s inspiring work in India is “The First 1,000 Days” campaign, which the organization leads in conjunction with the government of India. This program is a holistic approach to solving child malnutrition and teaches that you first need a healthy mother to have a healthy baby. Hence, in a newborn’s first 1,000 days of life (from conception to a child’s second birthday), breast milk loaded with wholesome nutrition is crucial in building ojas, a robust immune system, a well-fortified skeletal structure and supporting healthy brain development. Through the relationship building that Action Against Hunger has cultivated in India, community advocates and educators can work one-on-one with expectant mothers to share the importance of healthy, whole foods, sanitation and hygiene.

    Thank YOU!

The great cultural anthropologist, Margaret Mead, once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”. These words reign true year after year with our GWG campaign. We thank you in advance for shopping with a cause this holiday season and helping to support our donation to Action Against Hunger India. From the bottom of our hearts to yours, thank you for your commitment to your health and well-being for the betterment of all beings everywhere. May the peace you cultivate internally be shared with the rest of the world.
