Abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of lovingly oiling the body. More than a skincare ritual, it is a daily act of nourishment that supports the nervous system, circulation and overall balance.
In Sanskrit, sneha translates to both “oil” and “love.” Through the practice of snehana, or oiling the body, we are quite literally offering ourselves loving care, attention and grounding.
Practiced regularly, abhyanga supports a deeper sense of stability, warmth and connection within the body.
Why Practice Abhyanga
This daily ritual supports both the body's physical and subtle systems.
- Nourishes & softens the skin
- Supports lymphatic flow & natural detoxification
- Improves circulation & overall vitality
- Calms the nervous system & reduces stress
- Helps balance vata, pitta & kapha
- Supports strength, stamina & resilience over time
With consistency, abhyanga becomes less of a task and more of a grounding ritual that brings you back into your body.
Rooted in Ayurvedic Wisdom
“The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, a well-toned body, strength, charm and is less affected by aging.”
— Charaka Samhita

How to Perform Self-Abhyanga
Set aside 10–15 minutes for this ritual, ideally in the morning before bathing.
1. Warm the Oil
Place your body oil in a cup of hot water until it reaches a comfortable, warm temperature.
2. Begin at the Extremities
Apply the oil with intention, starting at the hands and feet and moving inward toward the center of the body.
3. Massage with Purposeful Strokes
- Use long, sweeping strokes along the arms a& legs.
- Apply circular motions around the joints.
- Massage the abdomen clockwise, following the natural flow of digestion.
- Use gentle, upward circular motions across the chest.
- Spend extra time on the feet & hands using back-and-forth movements.
- If you like, you can even massage your scalp.
4. Support the Back Body
Massage the back as best as you can, using downward strokes along the lower back to support grounding energy.
5. Allow the Oil to Absorb
Let the oil penetrate the skin for several minutes before bathing. Applying oil before a warm shower or bath helps open the pores, allowing the oil to absorb more deeply into the skin.
Follow with a warm shower or a Coconut Milk Bath to further soften and nourish the skin.
If you’re short on time, you can also apply oil to damp skin after showering or bathing. The moisture on the skin helps the oil absorb more easily, leaving the skin soft, nourished, and supported.

Make It a Ritual
Abhyanga is most effective when practiced consistently. Even a few times per week can shift how your body feels, making it more grounded, more supported and more at ease.
This ritual can also be paired with garshana (dry brushing) before oil application to further stimulate circulation and support lymphatic flow.
