Nurturing the Emotional & Spiritual Heart in February with Hridayam

February is a heart-focused month dedicated to connecting with Hridayam, the Spiritual Heart, a concept deeply rooted in Indian philosophy. Inherited from the Vedas (the foundational texts of ancient Indian spiritual and philosophical knowledge) and upheld for thousands of years, ancient rishis (also known as the sages of India) have used the Sanskrit term Hridayam to embody the essential Truth that lies at the core and hub of all existence. This theory delves into the depths of our being, inviting us to explore the essence of our inner Selves and tap into what some may call source energy and the universal connection that resonates within us all. As we tune into the wisdom passed down through generations, February becomes a sacred time to honor and nurture our relationship with the Spiritual Heart, paving the way for profound self-discovery.

    The Meaning of “Hridayam”

Hridayam, pronounced "hri-da-yam" in Sanskrit, means "the dwelling place of the self." The translation is derived from breaking down the word into its components: "hridi," which denotes “in the region of the heart,” and "ayam," representing "this one” and/or “the Self." Together, these elements convey the deep essence of the concept - that the Heart is not just a physical organ but also symbolizes the core of one's existence, the seat of consciousness and the sacred abode where the true self resides. In Vedic philosophy, Hridayam signifies the merging of emotions, consciousness and spirituality, underscoring the importance of accessing one's innermost Self for overall well-being and heightened self-awareness. This translation emphasizes the eloquent yet profound nature of the Sanskrit language in articulating the intricate layers of human existence and the spiritual voyage toward enlightenment.

    The “self” & the “Self”

To tap into the essence of Hridayam further, one must understand the concept of the “self” and “Self.” In Vedic literature, the distinction between “self” and “Self” is critical in understanding our existence. The "self" encompasses our ego, individual identity and self-esteem, reflecting our worldly attachments and perceptions. On the other hand, the "Self" represents our higher Self, the divine aspect within us that remains eternally connected to the spirit or the Divine. Thus, to achieve balance, it is essential to be rooted in both the "self" and the "Self." Positive self-esteem and self-love are fundamental for nurturing a healthy physical body, including the physical heart and ultimately cultivating spiritual self-awareness and a strong spiritual Heart (Hridayam).

Ayurveda & the Path of Enlightenment

Thankfully, we have been handed down the wisdom of Ayurveda to keep our physical body healthy and free from disease so we can fully engage with Hridayam and reconnect with the understanding that our true nature is spirit. By committing to a dinacharya practice (daily Ayurvedic self-care), understanding your relation to the 3 doshas ( vata , pitta and kapha ) and engaging in yoga and Heart opening meditation, Ayurveda believes that we can begin to etch the path towards enlightenment– the awakening to the idea that we are spirit, Divine and pure consciousness.

Enlightenment is a state of profound understanding and spiritual insight that transcends everyday consciousness. The path to enlightenment is often described as a journey of self-discovery and inner transformation. By cultivating compassion, empathy and mindfulness, individuals can gradually attain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world, leading to greater peace, clarity and spiritual fulfillment.

    Hridayam & Rose

The natural world is abundant in plant allies that can help us maintain a healthy physical heart as well as strengthen our connection to our Spiritual Heart or Hridayam. In Ayurvedic medicine, the flower, rose , has long been intertwined with this concept. From a physical perspective, roses are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which play a crucial role in improving heart health by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. These beautiful blooms have lowered blood pressure and cholesterol levels, promoting overall cardiovascular well-being. On a spiritual level, the essence of rose is said to resonate with the energy of the Heart chakra (Anahata), symbolizing love, compassion and harmony. On an emotional level, the aroma of rose is believed to calm the mind, uplift the spirit & open the heart, fostering a deeper connection to one's inner Self and enhancing feelings of love and gratitude. From a doshic perspective, rose is balancing to all 3 doshas and has a particular affinity to help calm the fiery qualities associated with pitta dosha such as inflammation, anger, irritability, jealousy and rage. In essence, rose serves as a powerful ally in nurturing both the physical and spiritual aspects of the heart/Heart, making it a truly remarkable flower with profound benefits.
