Awaken & Renew: Ayurvedic Mind, Body, Spirit & Skin Ritual for Spring Balance

With the Vernal Equinox, we welcome the transition from the introspective, dormant energy of winter to the growth and abundance of spring. In Ayurveda, springtime is governed by kapha dosha, embodying the qualities of earth and water, which are cool, heavy, dense, cloudy and moist. Following Ayurvedic wisdom and traditions, to maintain balance and support our bodies in shedding winter’s stagnation, we turn to invigorating and detoxifying rituals to celebrate the Spring Equinox.

In this blog, we share an Ayurvedic mind, body, spirit and skin ritual designed to awaken the senses, stimulate circulation, and encourage lymphatic flow, allowing you to align with the season’s blossoming energy.

    1. Garshana (Dry Brushing) – Awaken & Exfoliate Your Skin

Garshana, or dry brushing, is an Ayurvedic practice that gently exfoliates the skin, stimulates lymphatic drainage and encourages circulation- perfect for shaking off winter’s sluggishness!

    How to Practice Garshana:

    • Wearing your 100% raw silk Garshana Gloves, begin your garshana massage at the top of the head.

    • You may choose to lightly massage the face using small circular motions from the center outward.

    • Move to the neck & shoulder areas using long brush strokes.

    • Continue to the hands, working your way up the arms to your shoulders. Use long strokes on the hands & arms, incorporating circular motions at your wrists & elbows.

    • Next, massage the abdominal area in a clockwise motion, the natural path of digestion.

    • The lower back & hips/buttocks area can be massaged using the circular motion.

    • Finish the massage at your feet, working your way up your legs to your hips. Use long strokes for the feet & legs & circular strokes for the ankles & knees.

    • Once finished, complete your routine with a shower to rinse off residual sloughed skin & toxins & follow with your Kapha Body Oil .

    2. Abhyanga with Kapha Body Oil – Clear & Invigorate

Revitalize your body and mind with abhyanga, the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage, using our Kapha Body Oil ! Crafted with warming ginger, refreshing peppermint and stimulating rosemary, this herbal-infused blend helps clear stagnation, awaken the senses and support healthy circulation. A perfect ritual for winter detoxification and spring renewal.

    How to Practice Abhyanga:

    • Warm the oil slightly and apply it generously over your body.

    • Follow the same sequence as you did for your garshana massage, using circular motions over joints and long strokes over limbs.

    • Pay extra attention to areas prone to stagnation, such as thighs, hips and abdomen.

    • While you allow the oil to absorb into the skin and awaken the senses, take a comfortable seat and practice your kapha balancing pranayama

    3. Kapalabhati Pranayama – Energize & Stimulate

Kapalabhati , or “Shining Skull” breath, is an invigorating pranayama or breathing technique that clears the mind, strengthens the respiratory system and boosts metabolism, making it perfect for balancing kapha’s sluggish, heavy and moist tendencies.

    How to Practice Kapalabhati:

    • Sit comfortably with a straight spine and relaxed shoulders.

    • Take a deep inhale through your nose.

    • Forcefully exhale through your nose by contracting your lower belly; the inhale happens passively.

    • Continue for 20-30 rapid breaths, then take a deep inhale and hold for a moment before exhaling fully.

    • Repeat for 2-3 rounds.

    4. Ginger Bath Salt - Warm & Detoxify

Our Ginger Bath Salt is the perfect seasonal ritual to stimulate circulation, encourage detoxification and restore balance. In Ayurveda, sweating (svedana) helps clear toxins (ama), open pores and revitalize the skin, making it an ideal practice for spring renewal. This warming blend of Epsom salt, Himalayan or Dead Sea salt and baking soda gently exfoliates while dry ginger ignites internal heat, promoting lightness and movement. Let this invigorating soak melt away heaviness and leave you feeling refreshed, re-energized and in harmony with the season.

How to Take a Ginger Salt Bath:

    • Gather everything you need for a soothing soak- your favorite towel, bathrobe, slippers, Trataka Ghee Candle and Ginger Bath Salt.

    • Draw a warm bath while sipping on a comforting cup of our Rooibos Chai Blend Tea.

    • Set the mood by lighting candles, playing soft music and dimming the lights.

    • Add ¼ cup of Ginger Bath Salt to the water or place it in a muslin bag for easier cleanup.

    • Soak in the bath for 15-20 minutes, reflecting on what you love about yourself and releasing anything that no longer serves you.

    • When you're ready, step out feeling renewed and let the water carry away everything you’ve let go.

    • Continue your detoxification journey with our Kapha Skincare Ritual

    5. Kapha Skincare Ritual – Refresh & Restore

Given kapha dosha’s naturally heavy and oily qualities, a spring skincare ritual should aim to lighten, detoxify and stimulate the skin. Our Kapha Skincare Ritual does just that, using carefully selected botanicals like French Green Clay, lemongrass, turmeric, tea tree and bibhitaki to cleanse, exfoliate and rejuvenate your early spring complexion.

    Spring Skincare Steps:

    • Cleanse & Exfoliate : Use our Kapha Cleanser & Mask to gently cleanse, exfoliate and boost circulation deep within your skin’s layers.

    • Tone : Spritz our Kapha Toner with astringent properties to refine pores and uplift the senses.

    • Moisturize : Opt for our lightweight, stimulating Kapha Serum to balance your skin’s sebum and reveal a balanced, all natural glow.

    Embrace the Seasonal Shift

By incorporating this Ayurvedic Mind, Body, Spirit & Skin Ritual, you can harmonize yourself with the renewing energy of spring. This is the perfect moment to awaken your senses, boost circulation and embrace the lighter, clearer energy available this kapha season. Let these practices guide you through a revitalizing spring, helping you release what no longer serves you and creating space for new growth, clarity and vitality.

    Happy Vernal Equinox!
