DIY Ayurvedic Churna for Healthy Summer Skin

With the passage of the summer solstice, we now find ourselves in full-fledged pitta season. This means that the fire element is at its strongest in the natural world. This is evident with the sun-drenched, long summer days and the temperatures that are rapidly heating up. Summer is an activating time of the year when the sun’s energy motivates us to peel ourselves away from our computers and inside activities to come outside and play. There may be BBQs, picnics, festivals and pool parties to attend and various rivers, lakes and beaches to swim or simply laze about beside their cooling waters.

With all of the summer heat, activation and adventures, this is the time of year when our skin can become prone to experiencing a pitta imbalance. This is because the fire element that is predominant in the natural environment has an effect on our skin, bodies and minds. Its fiery quality can easily lead to too much heat accumulating in the body and that can then manifest on the skin in the form of redness, oiliness, sensitivity, irritation, dryness and/or blemishes. In Ayurveda, there is a multitude of ways to keep the skin feeling soothed, happy and healthy during the blazing summer days:

Ayurveda provides tremendous support to keep your skin feeling its best during the summer months and throughout the rest of the year.

In addition to all of the aforementioned pitta balancing Ayurvedic rituals, one of our favorite Ayurvedic go-to’s for healthy summer skin is to heal the skin from the inside with a skin churna. In Ayurvedic herbalism, a churna is simply a mixture of powdered herbs combined with water to ingest or drink. This is a classical herbal preparation that helps its user to build a greater connection with plants and their medicine. Through seeing, tasting, touching and smelling each herbal ingredient that goes into your skin churna, you will begin to commune with the plant world and tap further into their potent healing properties.

Below we share with you a DIY Ayurvedic churna for healthy summer skin. This formulation is comprised of some of our favorite herbs that we readily use in the PAAVANI apothecary to make our organic, earth-based skin, body and wellness products. This skin churna’s formulation includes rose, hibiscus, manjistha, shatavari and turmeric and is designed to cool the skin and its tissues down while providing a nourishing dose of hydration. Rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, this churna will be the perfect glowing skin ally as you make your way outside for summer fun. Additionally, if you suffer from blemishes or breakouts, this summer skin churna can also be beneficial as it purifies the skin, eradicating excess heat and bacteria from the skin’s layers.

    Directions:

To make your skin churna, use a coffee grinder or blender to powder the required amount of PAAVANI Rose Petals. Next, simply blend all of the herbal ingredients together with a whisk and store in a glass, air-tight container (we recommend reusing an empty PAAVANI glass jar). When ready to consume, mix ½ teaspoon of your churna with ½ cup tepid or room temperature water and enjoy! We recommend drinking this churna two times per day, in the morning and evening, at least 1 hour away from meals.

Please note that this formulation is approximately 60 teaspoons and it should last you for 2 weeks. We recommend taking this Skin Churna for at least 1 month to begin to experience its healing benefits.
