Support Sustainable Packaging: New Compostable Refills!

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.” —Jane Goodall, primatologist & anthropologist

Each year on April 22nd, over 190 nations come together to celebrate something we all share and rely on for our health, happiness and survival - the earth! Inspired by the anti-war movement of the 1960s, Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 and was the brainchild of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. On April 22, 1970, Senator Nelson, alongside like-minded politicians and advocates, sought to raise public awareness around the devastating effects of pollution, oil spills, habitat loss and wildlife extinction through protests, education and events across the United States. National media attention took notice of their efforts and by the end of 1970, the United States Environmental Protection Agency was born. By 1990, Earth Day became a global movement.

As a country and as a planet, we have come a long way from the first Earth Day, but there is still much to do to conserve the health and preservation of the land, wildlife, water, air and ecosystems that we all collectively rely on as a species to thrive. At PAAVANI Ayurveda, we understand that we are a part of nature rather than separate from it and that it is our responsibility to be stewards of the earth. By doing so, we have the opportunity to cultivate a deeper connection with the natural world around us and give back to future generations.

    Stewards of the eARTH

As part of our duty as stewards of the earth, we strive to be eco-conscious and aware of our carbon footprint. Some of our sustainability efforts include:

    • Packaging our products in reusable glass and tin containers.

    • Only utilizing ingredients that are free from synthetic chemicals and parabens.

    • All products are certified cruelty free & vegan by PETA.

    • Only using organic and sustainably harvested herbal ingredients.

    • Keeping a close eye on plant species at risk and eliminating the use of any herbs that are threatened.

    • Sourcing our labels from a small, eco-friendly company that uses wind-generated electricity & prints only on recycled paper stock. The labels are also printed digitally, using water-based inks that generate little to no paper waste & no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs); which are linked to causing cancer & birth defects.

    • Sustainably package each order with 100% biodegradable and curbside recyclable Greenwrap instead of plastic bubble wrap and tape.

    • Reusing packaging materials to pack our wholesale orders.

    • Utilizing plastic-free mailers with recycled fiber content.

    • Offering a Recycling Program that allows customers to recycle their PAAVANI containers so that we can reuse them again and again.

    • Continuing to expand our sustainability measures as we grow.

As you can see, mother earth is central to our company’s mission and values and we pledge to never stop innovating more ways to support this precious planet.

    SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

That’s why, this Earth Day, we are thrilled to announce our latest earth-focused initiative, the launch of our Compostable Refills! You will now have the option to purchase your favorite Ayurvedic daily supplements: Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Golden Milk, Triphala and Ayurvedic Tonic Stack in a 100% compostable bag that you can use to refill your glass PAAVANI containers. Our hope is for you to buy your PAAVANI jar once and refill it forever! With this new approach, together we can help reduce the use of glass containers and plastic lids while supporting the future of more composting facilities worldwide.

What makes our Refill Bags 100% compostable is the plant-based materials they are made of. Rather than using plastic, these Kraft Poly Bags are made from polylactic acid (PLA) which is derived from corn, sugar or sugar beets. Please note, to be the most effective for the health and sustainability of the planet, the Compostable Refill Bags must have their label removed before composting and also be taken to a commercial composting facility instead of simply being thrown in your recycling bin or yard compost. If your local area does not have a composting facility, we encourage you to petition for one now! You can start a Change.org petition and call on your local government officials to make this a priority in your county.

    Earth Day is Every Day

As big proponents of the slogan “earth day is every day” throughout the year we will slowly be applying this concept to all of our dry goods, which includes our powdered and loose-leaf herbal products. So, stay on the lookout for Compostable Refills for Cleansers & Masks, Teas, Spice Blends, our Coconut Milk Bath and Neti Salt

We hope our new Compostable Refills inspire you to continue being a conscious consumer, keeping the health of the planet in mind with each purchase that you make. To reiterate what nature crusader Jane Goodall said, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make”. With this in mind, we invite you to join us this week in celebrating the earth and committing to treating every day like Earth Day!
